What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state which we all pass through at least twice a day when we wake up and go to sleep. For the purposes of therapy hypnosis is really all about relaxation. At all times you will remain fully conscious and aware, there is absolutely no question of you being under the control‚ of anyone or anything else.
There are many different sensations which people feel when experiencing the hypnotic state; some people feel a lightness of their limbs, some a heaviness, some feel a tingling sensation on their features. However, the one sensation that everyone feels during the hypnotic state, is a very pleasant feeling of relaxation, calmness and
quietness inside.
How does Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy help?
When in the hypnotic state our critical faculty becomes suppressed allowing greater and easier access to our subconscious mind. This allows us to take hypnotherapy forward in two ways: firstly, we could use positive suggestion hypnotherapy (clinical ) to control a particular symptom. This type of hypnotherapy is suitable for
smoking cessation, nail biting, pre-test nerves, or as a quick fix for anything that requires an immediate result, like fear of flying, public speaking, or sports performance enhancement etc. This type of hypnotherapy would usually take one or maybe two sessions. Secondly, we could use analytic hypnotherapy (pure hypnoanalysis) to remove the root cause of a symptom, such as phobias, social anxiety, shyness, depression, sexual problems, gambling etc. This type of hypnotherapy would usually take place over six to eight sessions
(certainly no more than twelve sessions).
'Pure hypnoanalysis' is unique to the I.A.H. and is to our knowledge faster, more empowering, and more effective than any other therapy in the world. The technique introduces the client into a light therapeutic hypnotic state, allowing easier access to the subconscious mind. Then using a process known as Free Association the client starts a process of subconscious recall leading to the cause of their symptom. It might be
that as a child we experienced an incident that created such enormous emotion that it is sufficient to penetrate the subconscious of the child, so that the whole incident becomes concealed from normal intellectual
awareness, and thus, suppressed.
The child will be completely unaware that the incident ever took place. The hidden emotion remains unresolved into adulthood and will turn into a free floating anxiety. Subconscious anxiety is intolerable to the human psyche, and will produce an effect mentally or physically for examples see the list below. It is these symptoms that bring people to therapy, but to gain reprieve from the symptom the original emotion must be released. Once the true cause has been unleashed, any extraneous emotions will also be released in a moment of surprising and enlightening liberation. The original event viewed by an adult mind can be put into proper proportion and will never again produce such strength ofemotion.

Treatment of fears and phobias at Bath & Frome Hypnotherapy clinic - for the people of Radstock (Midsomer Norton)
What is fear?
Whenever a person experiences a fearful situation (like being attacked by a large dog), their bodies natural fight or flight defense system clicks into action. It is likely in the future when the individual grows up they will
develop a healthy respect of "fear" for similar situations as they occur, however it is unlikely that the individual will develop a phobia about dogs from one incident alone, the person rationalizes the fearful situation and
makes sense of what has happened.
What is a phobia?
On the other hand, some situations occur that seem to make no sense at all, they are considered irrational (being afraid of spiders for example) these are called "Phobias" but there is no effect without a cause and all phobias serve the same purpose, which is the body's attempt to save us from a potentially threatening situation. It can happen that if a child, for example, has a terrifying experience and is unable to deal with the emotions they simply "block out" the memory of the experience and the feelings. However, there is nowhere for these feelings to go and so they remain inside the individual, sometimes dormant for many years. When the individual next experiences something that they find they are unable to deal with. The original feeling of fear is awakened but not the memory of it. The mind tries to make sense of these feelings and will project them outwards onto something which in many cases is totally unrelated to the original cause, for example an irrational fear of spiders, in other words, it is a symbol of the emotion.
Are phobias directly related to the problem?
Most phobias are not directly related to the cause of the problem, they are symbolic of it. The most obvious example is the fear of flying. There are 12 million people in the UK who have a fear of flying - approximately one in five people. How many people do you know who have lived through or experienced a plane crash? None ? Or very few. The majority of these people will most likely be connecting the experience of flying with an unconscious fear of being out of control, which their brain symbolizes and then projects onto the act of flying. So when a person experiences a phobia it is their minds way of trying to make sense of something that they are consciously unaware of.
Why do some people become phobic, while others don't?
It is quite possible that whilst the first person may be able to disconnecttheir feelings from unpleasant experiences thus avoiding being affected by them the next person may find themselves in a situation that creates intense emotions that they are not able to properly express and deal with, then that persons mind has the ability to hide those emotions. However, those emotions have nowhere else to go and remain inside the person bottled up, so the mind will create a phobia - to warn the person not to get into that (or any
similar) situation again. Makes sense doesn't it?
Will I remember what caused my phobia?
Most of the time an individual will not remember the events that created their particular problem. Under hypnosis, at the conclusion of therapy, however they are able to go back to the incident and release the memory of the event, and the emotion attached and finally be liberated from the negative effects for once and for all. We have treated and cured many hundreds of people suffering from various different phobias. There are many different types of phobia that people present with for therapy, aside from the well known phobia‚s like Acrophobia ( fear of heights ), Agoraphobia ( open spaces ), Arachnophobia ( spiders ) ,and Claustrophobia ( enclosed spaces ).
There are thousands of extremely common phobias that we treat:
Listed below are just a few.
Help with corporophobia (coprophobia), with hypno-analyisis, for residents of Radstock (Midsomer Norton)
This is a fear of anything related to faeces (poo) - this includes going to the toilet in public, fear of being heard going to the toilet, fear of the smell of toilets, feelings of being dirty and unclean. People who suffer from this phobia often develop complicated routines to avoid having to use a toilet outside their own home and if they have a full-time job outside this can lead to waiting to use the loo for prolonged periods of time. Apart from
the anxiety and panic that this can create, it can lead to physical problems such as severe constipation, piles and other bowel disorders.
Help with emetophobia, using hypnosis and hypnotherapy, for the residents of Radstock (Midsomer Norton)
This is a fear of being sick particularly in front of other people or in public places or of other people being sick. The sufferer will try to avoid places associated with eating or drinking such as pubs, clubs, restaurants
and cafes and tends to be extremely careful of what they eat and drink to avoid any possibility of being sick. This phobia tends to affect women more than men and consequently can lead to a women avoiding getting pregnant for fear of morning sickness. Being sick is viewed as being horrible, dirty, disgusting etc it is often the case that a sufferer will also feel the same way about toilets and going to the toilet.
Help for shy bladder (enuresis) using hypnosis and hypnotherapy, for the residents of Radstock (Midsomer Norton)
Shy Bladder Like Copraphobia this is a fear of using public toilets but this time it is a fear of urinating (peeing) in 'public' and can similarly vary in intensity from feeling uneasy about doing this in a public toilet to complete
avoidance. This affects more men than women as men usually have to pee in front of others whereas women have the privacy of a cubicle. As with copraphobia, this can lead to physical problems such as bladder infections.
Help for social phobia / Social Anxiety, by Hypnotherapist Daniel Nuttall
A person is suffering from this when they have an acute fear of being judged by others, being ridiculed in public, being humiliated or embarrassed. It is not the same as being a bit shy or having a lack of confidence - many 'normal' people can experience shyness or a drop in confidence from time to time. A person suffering from social phobia finds it difficult to carry out even the simplest actions in public such as eating, drinking, going to a public toilet, using the changing rooms at a gym or swimming pool - any environment which might be considered by the person to put them 'on show' and the action of public speaking would be almost impossible. A person will often be extremely sensitive to criticism or any form of rejection. They have heightened feelings of inferiority to others and suffer from blushing, stuttering or stammering, an inability to express themselves clearly and often find it difficult to maintain eye contact with anyone they are in conversation with. It is an extremely disabling phobia and, in fact, is the most common phobia of all.
These are just a very small sample of phobias we treat at Bath and Frome hypnotherapy clinic. So whatever your problem you can be assured the hypnotherapist will have treated it successfully many times before. So just
give us a call for an introductory consultation and prepare for a positive life changing experience.

Treatment of OCD At Bath & Frome Hypnotherapy clinic - serving the people of Radstock (Midsomer Norton)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is the name given to a condition in which people experience repetitive and upsetting thoughts and/or behaviours. It has two main features: obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are involuntary thoughts, images or impulses. Common obsessions include, but are not limited to, fears about dirt, germs and contamination; fears of acting out violent or aggressive thoughts or impulses; unreasonable fears of harming others, especially loved ones; abhorrent, blasphemous or sexual thoughts; inordinate concern with order, arrangement or symmetry; inability to discard useless or worn out possessions; and fears that things are not safe, e.g.household appliances. The main features of obsessions are that they are automatic, frequent, upsetting or distressing, and difficult to control or get rid of.
Just as with obsessions, there are many types of compulsions. It is common for people to carry out a compulsion in order to reduce the anxiety they feel from an obsession. Common compulsions include excessive washing and cleaning; checking; repetitive actions such as touching, counting, arranging and ordering; hoarding; ritualistic behaviours that lessen the chances of provoking an obsession (eg, putting all sharp objects out of sight); and acts which reduce obsessional fears (eg, wearing only certain colours).
Compulsions can be observable actions, for example washing, but they can also be mental rituals such as repeating words or phrases, counting, or saying a prayer. Again, not all types of compulsion are listed here. The
main features of compulsions are they are repetitive and stereotyped actions that the person feels forced to perform. People can have compulsions without having obsessional thoughts but, very often, these two occur together. Carrying out a compulsion reduces the person's anxiety and makes the urge to perform the compulsion again stronger each time. A person can have some or all of these symptoms. Almost everybody experiences the type of thoughts that sufferers have (eg, wanting to double-check the front door or the gas).
However, most people are able to dismiss these thoughts. People with OCD cannot ignore unpleasant thoughts and pay undue attention to them. Analytical Hypnotherapy has been proven to be a most effective way to treat
O.C.D. By dealing with the underlying cause of the problem, thus resolving all remaining symptoms for good
Hypnotism and hypnotherapy for children and adolescents at the Bath & Frome Hypnotherapy clinic - serving the people of Radstock (Midsomer Norton)
Hypnosis is used very effectively in the treatment of children and adolescents. Daniel Nuttall will discuss many of the important techniques, insights and increased understanding necessary for treating children and
adolescents safely and successfully during an initial consultation. A technique which is hugely successful in treating a child‚s problems is 'The Blowaway Technique'(TM) .As a child grows their experiences bring up
emotions that they may find difficult to deal with, this may be due to their age, life circumstances or a traumatic event. As children they are not yet able to deal with and process intense emotion effectively. Thus, this emotion is often bottled up inside and produces symptomatic behaviours or thoughts. The blowaway technique‚ is used to find the underlying emotion and literally blow it away. Daniel uses Child-friendly inductions, building rapport, trust and belief is very important when working with children.
Nail-biting, bed wetting, school phobia, anxiety, blushing, coprophobia, hair pulling, eating disorders, sleeping problems are common problems Daniel deals with regularly in his consulting room. Aspergers Syndrome, Autism and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), everything is taken into consideration in order to help children safely and successfully. Many people find their child or teenager struggles with school. It can be a constant battle just to get them out of the door each morning. Sometimes a child or teenager just needs a confidence boost or struggles around examination time or getting to grips with their study plan. Sometimes there are behavioral issues, tantrums, problems with food, some children develop habits which they would like to break or are suffering from an irrational fear of something. Bullying can be an issue in their lives, bedwetting is often a problem for many children and some teenagers may have developed bladder and bowel dysfunction, or aneating disorder. Skin problems eg eczema and psoriasis and breathing problems eg asthma are generally worsened by stress and anxiety. Allergies are very common in the life of children today which are exacerbated by stress and anxiety. All parents want is what is best for our children, we want to see them grow up healthily and happily.
Any treatment of under eighteens must take place with a Parent or Guardian present.

- You will not be 'giving up' anything.
- The Hypnotist will give you huge immediate better and tangible reasons to NEVER smoke again
-and the Hypnotist will not bore you by telling you what you already know about how bad smoking is .
Smoking is just distorted thinking.
Distorted thinking is what we use to substantiate our belief system (' I cant stop smoking, I'm addicted, or I need to smoke to cope '). Smoking is a cycle of dysfunction. Think about smoking fantasize about smoking and
build a desire to smoke. At Bath and Frome hypnotherapy you will learn how to get off the cycle and quit smoking easily and forever.
A couple of years ago the largest study ever conducted into stopping smoking was undertaken (in the U.S.A.) It studied everything from; will power, nicotine patches, positive thinking, placebos, chewing gum etc - and the
conclusion was that "most techniques turned out to be hopeless, Hypnosis however came out as the most effective anti-smoking technique.
Cigarette smokers in Radstock (Midsomer Norton) can now stop easily!
There are three reason why people NORMALLY find it difficult to quit smoking:
1) YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE ADDICTED TO NICOTINE, AND YOU ARE AFRAID OF THECONSEQUENCIES OF STOPPING.
2) BECAUSE OF THIS BELIEF SYSTEM TO SMOKE BRINGS RELIEF WHICH EQUALS PLEASURE WHICH FURTHER SUPPORTS THE MYTH OF ADDICTION.
3) EVEN IF YOU KNOW HOW EASY IT IS TO STOP, SMOKING SATISFIES A SUBCONCIOUS NEED. ( Instant oral gratification ) IF IT IS TAKEN AWAY OR "GIVEN UP" YOU STILL BELIEVE THAT SMOKING IS ASSOCIATED WITH THAT TYPE OF SATISFACTION.
The 'Easy Smoking Cessation' method is not just hypnotherapy, we use a combination of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy ), and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), to change the belief system you have about smoking.
We use a powerful condensed session of hypnotherapy to replace your old smoking habit with some life enhancing positive subliminal instructions, this will give you an immediate and powerful feeling of pride, achievement and freedom every time you would have had a smoke.
The session lasts for approximately one hour, half chatting, and half hypnotherapy, and 95% clients report never smoking again. No withdrawal, no symptoms and no cravings.
This method will not fix you like you might expect patches or gum to do. It will fundamentally change the way you view smoking forever.
Daniel Nuttall is a specialist in stopping smoking in the Bath, Frome, Trowbridge, Warminster and the surrounding areas, He has a website dedicated to quitting smoking: "http://www.easysmokingcessation.co.uk"
